SummaryAims of the course:
1. To provide an introduction to the theory and practice of health promotion.
2. To critically review approaches to planning and evaluation in health promotion and their application.
Course description This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the theoretical and empirical basis of health promotion, and enable them to plan and evaluate health promotion policies and programmes.

The course will be structured into the following topics:

1. Introduction to the course; concepts of health and health promotion; models and approaches to health education
2. Determinants of health actions
3. Health promotion planning and evaluation part 1
4. Health promotion planning and evaluation part 2
5. Community health promotion

Formal summative written assessment will constitute 60% of the student's grade. Online assessment will incorporate a variety of activities and will constitute 40% of the overall course grade and is taken to represent a formative assessment of learning throughout the programme.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a critical awareness of key principles, perspectives, models and theories which shape current health promotion policy and practice, and an understanding of the factors which contribute to lifestyle choices and health behaviours.
  2. Critically apply a framework to plan and evaluate health promotion programmes and activities in a specific context.
Reading List
The theory and practice of health promotion draw on a wide range of disciplines including epidemiology, sociology, education, psychology, marketing, management, economics, politics. There is therefore no single text that encompasses all these aspects in depth; however several books give good overviews and there are also several books that focus on health promotion planning and/or evaluation.
