SummaryThe research dissertation is a major piece of work that requires significant time and commitment from the student. Through the dissertation the student has the opportunity to identify a research or professional practice issue related to the research cluster named in the chosen MSc (R) programme, and undertake an independent research study to address it. Where appropriate, students will have the opportunity to link with existing research projects in one of Moray House School of Education's research groups or centres, or external partner organisations.
Course description Academic Description:
The dissertation is the major component of assessment for the Masters by Research. Students will have the opportunity to develop a sustained piece of research in their own subject area, under the guidance of an allocated research supervisor. Dissertation studies may be field, laboratory or desk based.

Course Content:
Students will work with their research supervisor to plan, execute, interpret and write-up an independent research project. The research questions, content and methods will be refined in conjunction with the supervisor. In preparing their dissertation, students will develop skills in: defining a suitable topic of enquiry; framing research questions and shaping appropriate research strategies; researching evidence or literature and critically assessing it; designing and/or applying suitable research methodology; analysing and interpreting evidence; communicating research plans and findings; and, effective academic referencing.

Student Learning Experience:
Students work with their allocated research supervisor, one-to-one, with regular supervisory meetings for guidance on the research and writing of the dissertation. Students will demonstrate their achievement of the intended learning outcomes through the preparation of the dissertation (up to 30,000 words).

Feedback Students will be provided with on-going formative feedback (where appropriate written or oral) from their individual supervisor throughout the dissertation process. Detailed written feedback from two examiners (one external and one internal examiner) will be provided following assessment of the dissertation.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Undertake a significant piece of work demonstrating substantial autonomy, initiative and decision making
  2. Identify and define a topic of enquiry suitable for a dissertation and justify its theoretical significance showing effective use of relevant literature and other scholarly evidence, ensuring professional relevance and practical feasibility
  3. Identify appropriate methodology and use it effectively in an ethical and responsible manner
  4. Systematically and critically analyse collected evidence or literature using appropriate techniques
  5. Communicate the research plans and findings observing appropriate academic guidelines and reflect on how the knowledge can be transferred to a professional context
