SummaryThe course provides an in-depth and critical analysis of 'race' and ethnicity. In so doing the course will explore differing theoretical explanations of 'race' and ethnicity, and critically compare actual manifestations in different social settings. The course will also investigate the relationships between 'race', ethnicity, identity and wider social processes such as changing ideas about and experiences of racism, ethnicity, gender, migration, social mobility, immigration, and social justice. The course is multi-disciplinary in perspective and will draw on work from across sociological, political, historical, economic and anthropological ways of thinking about and conceptualising 'race' and ethnicity.

  1. Understand major concepts, issues and debates concerned with 'race' and ethnicity
  2. Critically engage with differing theoretical perspectives regarding 'race' and ethnicity
  3. Compare manifestations of 'race' and ethnicity in different contemporary social settings
  4. Have the skills to analyse the ways in which 'race' and ethnicity interact with other sociological processes and intersectionally with other social categories/stratifications
  5. Understand the intersections of 'race' and ethnicity across a variety of historical and comparative contexts
