Summary | The sport industry is of great social, economic and political significance. Sport is a source of income and expenditure for governments, provides employment for thousands of people and accounts for some of the biggest one-off events on an international scale. The demand for and supply of sport and recreation has increased considerably over the last decade so it is crucial that this industry is managed effectively. This core first year course introduces students to principles of sport management, organisational theory and organisational behaviour.
The private (commercial), public and voluntary sectors of the industry are examined to uncover some of the key similarities and differences in this large and diverse sector. Questions of provision and planning are covered. Key management theories are used to critically examine the management of human, physical and financial resources across different sport sectors. It covers principles of management and examines organisational structures, including governance, key elements of organisational behaviour and culture and organisational development within sport and recreation.
This course considers the implementation and evaluation of policies associated with sport and recreation management and in the complimentary fields of physical activity and health and wellbeing. It focuses on applying theories to traditional and contemporary sport organisations to illustrate the ways in which sport policy is implemented. Professional practice across several sports sectors will be scrutinised.
The course also aims to build key personal study skills that will support academic progress and build professional management capabilities. |
