Course description |
Academic Description:
The course aims to broaden students' understanding of Christian theology by helping them to understand how key theological themes have developed in global contexts. With a particular focus on Africa, Asia, and Latin America, students will be exposed to the theological challenges faced by Christians around the world. Theories about contextualisation are considered in relation to the cultural and sociopolitical concerns of these contexts.
Syllabus/Outline Content:
The course will cover theoretical issues in the field, as well as offer a survey of theological themes through primary and secondary source material. Some of the themes that will be covered include: God and Gods (theology proper); Guilt, Shame, and the Sinned Against (theological anthropology); Messiah, Sage, Ancestor (Christology); I Am Because We Are (ecclesiology).
Student Learning Experience Information:
The course has a programme of a one-hour lecture plus a one-hour seminar per week. There is a schedule of reading to be carried out before each seminar. Each student will be required to give a short oral presentation at one tutorial during the semester. Through participation in lecture and tutorial discussions, as well as through written work and the examination included in the assessment schedule, students will demonstrate their achievement of the intended learning outcomes.
