SummaryThis course offers the opportunity for sustained critical engagement with Friedrich Schleiermacher's The Christian Faith, one of the landmark works of nineteenth-century theology. The course will proceed carefully through this text, exploring its methodology and investigating a range of theological loci en route. At each stage, the course seeks to promote a critical yet constructive dialogue between Schleiermacher and alternative theological positions.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course, a student will have:
1) achieved a clear understanding of the overall structure of Schleiermacher's The Christian Faith and of its particular methodology;
2) gained a detailed knowledge of selected doctrinal loci as treated in The Christian Faith, along with their wider implications;
3) enhanced their critical ability to engage and evaluate the selected readings in the course of preparing for and participating in seminars;
4) developed their skills in both presentation and writing tasks in the course of the seminar discussions and the course assignment.
