SummaryThis course considers the different causes of disease in poultry, and will provide an ability to critically evaluate appropriate methods of diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control of disease.
Course description Week 1: The anatomy of the chicken (respiratory, reproductive and alimentary tract, post mortem examination)

Week 2: Poultry diseases and diagnosis (back yard chickens, assessing health)

Week 3: Clinical assessment of commercial flocks and practice of biosecurity

Week 4: Main respiratory diseases, including avian influenza and Newcastle's disease

Week 5: Enteric diseases of poultry, with an emphasis on gut health in meat chickens

Week 6: Control and prevention of other poultry diseases, including production diseases (ascites, skeletal problems and pododermatitis)

Week 7: Peritonitis, Marek's disease, and osteoporosis

Week 8: Zoonotic diseases (Salmonella and Campylobacter)

Week 9: Vaccine programmes and health plans

Week 10: Hatching eggs, egg storage, hatchery management, viable chick production

Additional Information (Assessment) Formative:
Around week 4, MCQs to test knowledge of diseases etc. Around week 9, example technical note, group working to identify good points and areas where technical note could be improved and how.

Summative:
1) Case studies - write a report on symptoms of a disease in a flock (40%)
2) Write a technical note for flock owners on biosecurity measures to take in the face of a disease outbreak (60%)
Feedback Students will receive written or oral feedback on all formative and summative assessments within 15 working days of each assessment being due.
