SummaryThe objective of this course is to promote a scientific, evidence based approach to veterinary oncology, and to help students develop both practical and theoretical skills in the field. The student is expected to build on the foundation skills developed when undertaking the A and B modules/courses, and to demonstrate progression towards advanced practitioner skills. The candidate will be able to evaluate their own standards of practice and develop strategies for continuous improvement in the future.
Course description This assessment-only course forms part of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (Veterinary Oncology). Students wishing to achieve this certificate will need to complete the following modules: A-FAVP.1 Foundations in Advanced Veterinary Practice, B-PAP.2, C-Onc.2 and C-Onc.3, plus one other B or C module. Upon completion of all the necessary modules, a further synoptic assessment will be required.

This course focuses on the approach to the cancer patient, cancer pathology and surgical treatment of cancer. The candidate will be able to demonstrate an ability to apply their understanding of the approach to a patient with cancer including cancer diagnostics and oncologic surgery

Additional Information (Assessment) This course will be assessed by the following methods.

Two 1500-word case reports
10-15 short-answer questions (SAQs)
A case log of 25 cases
Feedback All assignments will be marked and feedback provided within a period of 15 working days following submission (excluding holidays periods whereby the University of closed, e.g. over the Christmas period).

Opportunities for informal feedback arise through personal tutor and live sessions as well as through email discussions. Formal feedback and feedforward will be provided only on coursework assignments.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Evaluate an oncology patient and make a diagnostic plan
  2. Select appropriate diagnostic and staging tests with consideration of the pro and cons of each test in relation to the evidence base in oncology
  3. Discuss the pathology of cancer in terms of tumour types and their natural history, including understanding the approach to patients with solid tumours and identification of patients that would benefit from multimodal therapy
  4. Understand the importance of critical appraisal of pathology reports, understand the importance of immunohistochemistry in diagnosis, and perform simple cytology analysis.
  5. Make decisions about the role of surgery in a cancer case
