SummaryThis course will teach students about anaesthetic equipment used during veterinary anaesthesia. The areas covered will include, but are not limited to, equipment for delivering gaseous anaesthesia and equipment for monitoring the patient. The course will cover how to safely and effectively use equipment during the peri-anaesthetic period.

Students will also learn about assessment of the patient during the peri-anaesthetic period and develop an understanding of how to manage critical incidents during anaesthesia. The course will cover the current guidelines on cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Course description This course will include the following areas:
- Knowledge and understanding of anaesthetic machines and related equipment.
- Knowledge and understanding of monitoring equipment function and limitations.
- Knowledge and understanding of patient assessment during the peri-anaesthetic period
- Knowledge and understanding of the theory behind current cardiopulmonary resuscitation guidelines

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Explain the function and use of anaesthetic equipment during the peri-anaesthetic period, including being able to draw and/or describe the parts of the anaesthetic machine.
  2. Select appropriate types of anaesthetic equipment for specific situations and troubleshoot equipment related problems.
  3. Describe how to assess patients and recognise problems that may occur in the peri-anaesthetic period.
  4. Discuss factors which may lead to critical incidents and/or anaesthesia accidents and describe appropriate actions and treatments.
