|Summary||This course will give students an understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing animal health and welfare globally. The course builds on the Science for Agri-Food Systems courses in year 1 and Animal Systems year 2 course, and is suitable for all students that have satisfactorily completed years 1 and 2 of the programme, or others who have successfully completed year 2 in related (e.g. biological sciences) programmes.
This course will give students an understanding of:
- The development of animal health and welfare concepts.
- Relationships between health, welfare and management.
- Assessing health and welfare.
- Economics of animal health and welfare - animal and population perspective.
- Prevention and control of health and welfare issues.
This course will use case studies and examples of animal health and welfare issues worldwide in all major domesticated species.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Evaluate different approaches to animal health and animal welfare
- Demonstrate awareness of animal health and welfare assessment methodologies
- Demonstrate the interactions between health and welfare when managing farm animals
- Analyse different strategies for preventing and controlling health and welfare issues.
- Assess the economic implications of health and welfare improvements
