Summary | As agriculture is part of a number of supply chains, the purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to the functioning of those chains. It will consider the interaction of different stages of the chain and emphasise the way they operate and coordinate production as well as their quest for quality and food safety. Examples will be taken from developed and developing countries. |
Course description |
The course will present an overview of the different aspects characterising agri-food supply chains. The topics will consider aspects such as product quality, contracts between suppliers and customers (e.g. farmers and processors), retailers and consumers influences on the chain operation.
This course will be delivered by a series of lectures, tutorials, exercises.

Students will have weekly quizzes on supply chain issues (30%). Students will prepare a project based on a supply chain of their choice, utilising appropriate data sources (50%). A poster based on the project (10%) will be presented (10%). |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify the critical factors impacting modern supply chains of agricultural and food products
- Critically assess supply chain management issues related to trust, information flows along the chain, relationships and how they impact their operation.
- Appreciate the importance of quality and standards on the functioning of agri-food supply chains.
- Determine the main characteristics of contracts between suppliers and customers and their importance on the organisation of food supply chains.
- Assess knowledge about the influence of retailers and consumers on the organisations and trends of agri-food chains.
