Summary | This course will focus on the prevention and control of various parasitic diseases of importance in veterinary and public health and will cover topics including epidemiology, diagnosis, eradication, drug therapy, vaccination and primary healthcare programmes in both UK and internationally. Pathogens discussed include examples of waterborne and zoonotic infections, e.g. cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, toxoplasmosis, echinococcosis, trypanosomiasis, scabies and toxocara. The course is taught by different external experts with experience in both veterinary and public health. |
Course description |
The course aims to introduce the students to the more applied areas of research, impact and policy development relevant to the control and prevention of several different parasitic diseases of importance in both veterinary and public health. Several different parasitic diseases are discussed within the course and the guest lecturers involved in teaching the course have experience of working in veterinary and public health and cover aspects of epidemiology, parasite biology, disease impact, diagnostics, vaccination, therapeutics along with policy development and setting up disease prevention programmes nationally and internationally. The main emphasis on the course is to use knowledge of parasite epidemiology and biology to look at practical methods of intervention and how new research and innovation may help contribute towards this.
