**For academic year 2021-22, the School of GeoSciences hopes to be able to run residential UK and overseas field trips as normal. However, due to possible ongoing restrictions around travel, social distancing and other Covid-19 impact on Health & Safety requirements, our fieldtrips may be subject to change or cancellation. We will continue to follow advice from the University and the Scottish and UK Governments over the next 12 months and adjust our plans accordingly, with the ultimate aim of ensuring the safety of our students and staff above all else. In the event that a planned fieldtrip or field activity cannot go ahead as advertised, alternatives will be put in place to ensure that the learning outcomes of the affected courses can still be met**

Course options

Earth Modelling and Prediction

Select exactly 20 credits of the following courses
Notes:
Earth Modelling and Prediction is a compulsory course for students with GCE A-level Maths at Grade D or below, or Higher Maths at Grade C or below (or no Maths GCE A-level or Higher).

Students with sufficient qualifications can take the course but not for credit.
AND

Level 7 and 8 courses in Schedules A-Q, T, W and Y

Select between 40 and 60 credits from Level 7 and 8 courses in Schedules A-Q, T, W and Y
Notes:
Students can take a maximum of 40 credits Level 7 language courses in 1st AND 2nd year (combined)

Year 2 Academic year: 2021/22, Starting in: August

Notes:
Course options in Group B MUST be taken by 2nd year direct entry students. There are no elective courses for this group.

Students on the five year MEarthSci should take the 60 credits of compulsory courses plus either EMP2 and 40 credits of other electives OR 60 credits of electives (if EMP2 is not required).

Earth Modelling and Prediction 2

Select exactly 20 credits of the following courses
Notes:
Earth Modelling and Prediction 2 is a compulsory course for students with GCE A-level Maths at Grade C or below, or Advanced Higher Maths at Grade D or below (or no Maths GCE A-level or Higher or Advanced Higher).

Selected courses must be taken in Semester 1.
AND

Level 7 and 8 courses in Schedules A-Q, T, W and Y

Notes:
Student who are required to take the 20 credit course Earth Modelling and Prediction 2 should take a total of 40 credits of course from this list.

Students who are NOT required to take EMP2 should take a total of 60 credits from this list.

Geology and Physical Geography - Compulsory Courses for 2nd Year Direct Entry

COMPULSORY COURSES FOR 2ND YEAR DIRECT ENTRY STUDENTS.

Earth Dynamics and Evolution of the Living Earth must be taken in Semester 1.
Introduction to the Geological Record must be taken in Semester 2.

Year 3 Academic year: 2021/22, Starting in: August

Notes:
The year is made of 100 credits of in-class courses and 20 credits of field course.

Students can take either: (1) 40 credits of options in S1 or (2) 20 credits of option in S1 and 20 credits of options in S2. The S1/S2 balance of in-class courses will be 60/40 with option (1) or 40/60 with option (2).

Students wanting to achieve an MEarthSci should have taken 120 credits worth of level 11 courses by the end of their fifth year.

In order to progress into the 5th year of the MEarthSci, students must achieve an average of 60% or more over the 3rd and 4th year combined. Boards of Examiners will consider cases of progression for students who are borderline (i.e. achieve between 58% and 59.99% average across their 3rd and 4th years), taking into account the same factors for progression which are taken into account for other progression, award or classification decisions. Borderline criteria used by Boards of Examiners are published to students in advance.
