In the first year students should also have passed Architectural Design Studio C (Integrated) and Architectural Design Studio D (Integrated) from year 1, as well as Architectural Technology Research and Studies in Contemporary Architectural Theory in order to progress into Architectural Design Studio H.
Course description The emphasis in this course is the closing of a design thesis inquiry relevant to current architectural issues, including tested hypotheses and design speculations at a range of scales. The course seeks to develop awareness of, ability to recognize, and work with a guiding research inquiry, and to understand how this informs and is activated by architectural design and urban proposition. It is expected that the course will culminate in appropriate presentation of complex architectural and urban and/or landscape proposals, represented as part of an identified research inquiry.

Assessment (Further Info) Written Exam 0 %, Coursework 100 %, Practical Exam 0 %
Additional Information (Assessment) Graded and marked learning outcomes-based assessment which is used to produce a single, summative, numerical mark for the course.

Learning Outcomes are all weighted equally.

Learning outcomes are assessed by coursework, presented in the form of drawings, models, digital representations, etc. Assessment is made with reference to the ARB Part 2 graduate criteria required to be demonstrated in the course (see below).
Feedback Feedback takes place throughout the course in the following contexts:

Tutorial Feedback in response to the drawn/built outcome of weekly drawing exercises.

Review Feedback is a critical reflection on the work produced in the context of the course. Reviews relate to individual, group and studio themes.

Formative Feedback is written or dedicated verbal tutorial feedback to individual students in response to work in progress. This feedback uses the Learning Outcomes as markers to communicate specific areas for investigation and further development. [Specific dates and times are determined by Course Organiser]

Summative Feedback is written feedback to individual students on completion of the course work. [Specific dates and times are determined by Course Organiser]

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. The ability to develop a research inquiry which is clearly and logically argued, has awareness of disciplinary and interdisciplinary modes of research, draws from specifically defined subject knowledge, and is relevant to current architectural issues.
  2. The ability to test hypotheses and speculations in architectural design, which may be informed through materials, processes and techniques of building, the design and development of cities, histories and theories of architecture and the related arts, or management, practice and regulatory frameworks.
  3. A critical understanding of, and ability to present complex design proposals in the context of a research inquiry through appropriate forms of representation (eg. verbal, drawing, modelling, photography, film, computer, installation, performance and workshop techniques).
Reading List
Studio themes change on an annual basis and are determined by the studio leaders in dialogue with Course Organiser and Programme Director. Reading lists therefore change with each new thematic and tailored reading lists are issued as part of briefing documents.
Additional Information
Graduate Attributes and Skills Ability to generate complex design proposals showing understanding of current architectural issues, originality in the application of subject knowledge and, where appropriate, to test new hypotheses and speculations;

Ability to evaluate materials, processes and techniques that apply to complex architectural designs and building construction, and to integrate these into practicable design proposals;

Ability to evaluate and apply a comprehensive range of visual, oral and written media to test, analyse, critically appraise and explain design proposals;
