| Course description |
Using a transdisciplinary approach that draws from disciplines including visual and cultural studies, cultural geography, contemporary art theory and practice, social anthropology and literary theory, students will undertake mini theoretical and practical projects and experiments in situ at various sites in the Edinburgh region, including Ian Hamilton Finlay's Little Sparta. The course will have two assessments: an oral presentation (30%) and a 3000 word research diary, in which students both produce knowledge about and reflect upon the activities and projects they have undertaken during the semester. The research diary is intended to be a critical reflection on the fieldwork site with close references to a selection of the weekly readings.
This course aims to contextualise the theories, practices and methodological tools that characterize contemporary cultural landscape studies by requiring students to undertake instructor-led fieldwork exercises at specially chosen sites in and around Edinburgh (including Little Sparta), as well as undertaking required reading in landscape studies.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Have a capacity to formulate 'fieldwork' questions and research designs that are driven by appropriate theories and research questions relating to landscape studies.
- Have an ability to select appropriate theoretical frameworks and to reflect upon fieldwork practices and the associated data produced as a result.
- Have an ability to coherently and creatively communicate research findings in oral and written formats.
