SummaryThis course is intended for students who have some knowledge and experience of building simulation. You will gain skills in applying sophisticated simulation techniques packages that define building services and user patterns in a precise way. As part of the course you will be able to deploy building simulation software to model your own design work to predict its behaviour in a variety of climatic contexts
Course description This course is suitable if you already have some knowledge and experience of building simulation techniques and develops many of the themes explored in Building Simulation : Principles. The course gives you expertise and skills in developing sophisticated design models for testing. This course is primarily intended for students enrolled on MSc Advanced Sustainable Design. It gives you the opportunity to interrogate your design practice from a project originating from a studio design course.

The course is delivered in three linked stages:

Skillset: this develops your existing expertise and skills in simulation with an emphasis on the precise specification of building services and usage patterns.

Scenario: you work to define an aspect of your design practice in a way that can be successfully modelled by building simulation software. It helps you define critical quantitative benchmarks and a methodology to reflect and interpret simulation data.

Model: you reframe a project from your design practice and produce performance enhancement strategy through iteration and simulation. This forms the basis of a design report that documents and reflects on your work.

The course is delivered through a combination of lectures and practical workshops with an emphasis of working in groups to encourage peer assisted learning. We use online instruction resources to supplement classroom activities and tuition. Much of the course is based on you creating and interrogating design models which you then reflect on in the form of an analytic report at the end of the course.

Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed Building Simulation Principles (ARCH11265)
Co-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students also take Advanced Sustainable Design Elaboration (ARCH11042)

Additional Information (Assessment) There is one assignment. It is an analytic report that asks you to describe and reflect on your work applying, simulation processes and strategies. This will be in based on a substantial element of your design practice such as a building proposal. The report will be illustrated with your work and be around 4000 words in length.

The analytic report forms 100% of your summative submission for this course and addresses all the learning outcomes for the course.
Feedback You will receive formative feedback throughout the course. It will take the form of verbal feedback in class as your work develops.

In the middle of the semester you will receive written formative feedback on a metrics and environmental strategy study that will form part of your analytic report. Additionally, you will also receive written feedback on your draft report at the end of the semester.

You will receive written summative feedback on final submission of your analytic report.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate knowledge of buildings services design and user behaviour in relation to building simulation scenarios.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the application of building simulation workflows to complex building contexts and programmes.
  3. Display skill in deploying building simulation techniques to interrogate, interpret and iterate design proposals in complex contexts and programmes.
  4. Show expertise in producing reflective, well-structured and incisive reporting of design and simulation processes.
