SummaryThe course surveys the relationship between structural engineering and architecture from the beginning of the Modern period, up to the present day. Specific themes which are covered are the relationship between structural form and structural performance, the types of relationships which have existed between architects and engineers, the different philosophical approaches which are possible to the relationship between structural design and architectural design, the engineer as designer and constructor, and the public perception of engineering. Included in the course are critical appraisals of the Sydney Opera House (Utzon), the Centre Pompidou, Paris (Piano and Rogers), the Lloyd's Headquarters building, London (Rogers), the 'Gherkin', London (Foster), the Riverside Museum, Glasgow (Hadid), the CCTV Headquarters, Beijing (Koolhaas) and the Bloomberg Headquarters, London (Foster). The influence of structural design on the development of sustainable architecture is an integral part of the course.

Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed ( Architectural History 1 (ARHI08005) OR Architectural History 1A: From Antiquity to Enlightenment (ARHI08001) AND Architectural History 1B: Revivalism to Modernism (ARHI08004) OR Architectural History: Introduction to World Architecture (ARCH08003) AND Architectural History: Revivalism to Modernism (ARCH08005) OR Architectural History 1A: Introduction to World Architecture (ARHI08009) AND Architectural History 1B: Revivalism to Modernism (ARHI08004)) AND ( Architectural History 2a: Order & the City (ARHI08006) OR Architectural History 2b: Culture & the City (ARHI08007))

Prohibited Combinations Other requirements Students should normally have passed at least 60 credits of Architectural History or History of Art/History courses at Level 8. If the pre-requisites cannot be met, entry to this course can be negotiated in consultation with either the Course Organiser or Programme Director (Architectural History).

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Assess the contribution (symbolic and literal) which structural technology has made to the development of Modern architecture.
  2. Access and further develop a knowledge of the prominent structural engineers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and of their principal works.
  3. Discuss the different philosophical approaches which are possible to the relationship between structural engineering and architecture.
  4. Assess the role of structural technology in the creation of sustainable architecture.
  5. Understand the methodology and vocabulary of scholarship and criticism as it may be applied to the field of architectural technology.
