SummaryThis course will consolidate an enhanced understanding of critical reflection in relation to methods of information gathering and editing of resources appropriate to your specialism.

Course description Drawing on a focused body of resources and visual material you will define a personal perspective in relation to your work.

Aims
1.To engage critically in specialist visual research in relation to art practice.
2.To build on and enhance an understanding of research that underpins a self-motivated approach to studio practice.
3.To identify appropriate materials, methods and processes of research within the context of your own work and current practice.

Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Artistic Research - Themes and Methods (ARTX10048) AND Contemporary Artistic Research (ARTX10051)
Co-requisites Students MUST also take: Art Practice 4 (ARTX10038) AND Visual Culture Research Project (20 credit) (ARTX10036) AND Presentation: Methods & Context 4 (ARTX10037)
Prohibited Combinations Other requirements This course is only available to students on a Degree Programme in the School of Art.

Additional Information (Assessment) Formative

Formative assessment takes the form of a review and an online submission.
The review will take place in week 11 of semester. You should be prepared to introduce your work and to discuss your ideas and your progress to date.
Please have available your work made for Art Practice as well as a portfolio of research material.


All discussion relating to goals and objectives will take account of the time remaining before your final assessments.

We undertake this review at this point in the year so that you can reflect on your 1st semester's learning and build upon that for the next semester. This allows for a full and frank discussion to take place, which should lead to a common understanding of your progress to date that is shared between you and your tutors. It allows you ample time to act on any suggestions ahead of the final assessments in May. You will receive grades at this point but they are purely formative. They are designed to give you an early indication of your progress.

Along with material looked at at the review you will also be required to upload
A draft Extended research report.

The research report should outline your work at the time of Formative assessment.

It should articulate how an artwork has been arrived at.
- How did you start?
- What did you look at?
- What processes did you use?
- What context are you working in?
- What are your methods?

The word count for the draft report is 1000 words.

The report is therefore a synthesis of what you have looked at and explored. The report could include sections from notebooks, your own writing (descriptive and reflective) as well references to other outside influences such as other artists or institutions like galleries or museums. The format should be chosen to reflect your working processes.

The research report should also include an additional edited portfolio of work.
The edited portfolio of work should include visual and other material that was instrumental in the development of your work throughout the year. This should contain up to 15 digital images of your work.

- Drawings and Collage (including digitally manipulated material)
- Sketchbooks and Notebooks
- Models and Maquettes
- Any other material you utilised to feed and inform your work.

This should not be everything you have produced or looked at over the first semester, but a carefully selected range of material that became significant in the development and realisation of your art practice
Any digital files (Audio or Video) or web links should also be uploaded to LEARN.

Summative

An Extended¿digital research report (2000 to 3000 words) uploaded onto LEARN.

The research report, should detail your years' body of work through text and imagery.


For the written component

-Photographs
- Drawings and Collage (including digitally manipulated material)
- Sketchbooks and Notebooks
- Models and Maquettes
- Any other material you utilised to feed and inform your work.

This should not be everything you have produced or looked at over the year, but a carefully selected range of material that became significant in the development and realisation of your art Practice. The report should contain a guideline of around 40 to 60 digital images of your work.
You may also upload any relevant digital files (Audio or Video, no longer than 10 mins) and web links.
Feedback Feedback is given on all formative in-course assessment within 15 working days of submission, or in time to be of use in subsequent assessments within the course, whichever is sooner.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Investigate: Present evidence of a critical understanding of key practices and methods that underpin a substantial project(s).
  2. Reflect: Demonstrate an ability to reflect on the impact of visual research on a considered body of work.
  3. Apply: Demonstrate a professional ability to apply a sophisticated clearly defined body of research in the support of your creative practice.
