SummaryThis course is aimed at students who began their studies at Edinburgh with prior knowledge of Chinese language and provides further intensive language work during the second year. As a continuation of Chinese 2A, this course aims to develop students' language competence in Chinese to upper intermediate level and to enable them to understand and use a fairly wide range of vocabulary and sentence structures in dealing with various topics orally and in writing from everyday life to specific topics that students are interested in. The course will also further students' autonomous learning skills and help them prepare for their year-abroad studies in the third year.

Students not taking a degree in Chinese who pass Chinese 2A Entry Test with a mark of at least 90% are also eligible.
Course description Students will spend the bulk of the class time studying language, with grammar and oral classes. In addition they will read a range of modern literary texts.

Feedback Feedback will be offered regularly as part of learning process where appropriate, e.g. after an assignment or an assessment. Students are also encouraged to reflect upon their own learning, and make their own list of action points after each feedback session.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Confidently use a range of upper-intermediate grammatical structures in spoken and written Chinese.
  2. Employ a good range of vocabulary on topics related to contemporary and modern society, tradition and culture.
  3. Interpret and identify the contents of complex texts on concrete and abstract topics.
  4. Distinguish and compare cross-cultural differences, problems and solutions.
  5. Discuss information with relative fluency and spontaneity in spoken form when interacting with native Chinese speakers.
