| Summary | Readings in modern Chinese history and thought, e.g. Mao Zedong etc.; the Chinese cinema and other media as an expression of Chinese thought since the twentieth century. Training in use of original language primary sources. 
 
All students will be given a formative feedback exercise that will be helpful for the assessment for this course and students¿ general ongoing academic development. |

    Topics covered can include: 
- The "Ethnic minority question" 
- The Cultural Revolution 
- Religious policy and practice 
 
What to expect from the course: 
Introduction to and discussion of different topics which focus on key developments in modern Chinese history and thought. Training in reading academic and non-literary modern Chinese, discussion of analysis of key texts, and training in critical analytical thinking. 
 
What is expected from you: 
To prepare the requested reading and contribute to discussions in class. Prepare and present when required.

Learning Outcomes 
    On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
    
        - Understand and explain key events in specific periods of China's modern history.
 - Explain and situate the core texts within developments in China's modern history.
 - Analyze and critically discuss modern Chinese historical and philosophical texts.
 - Create arguments based on use of modern Chinese historical and philosophical texts.
 - Develop oral and written presentation skills.
