|Summary||The course provides an overview of modern Chinese literature through the 20th century to the present day. Key trends and writers will be covered and their works will be analysed in historical, cultural, and political contexts. A few literary theories will be introduced as well to serve as frameworks for analysis and discussion of the texts.
Readings will consist of academic literature and Chinese short stories and novels in English translation. Chinese texts will be provided where possible but reading these is optional.
Students will be expected to watch video lectures online and complete various assignments individually and in groups throughout the semester.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate familiarity with and understanding of the major developments in Chinese literature from the New Culture Movement to the present day .
- Analyse representative texts of the period in their literary, historical and social context.
- Use literary theory to analyse texts.
- Evaluate and compare Chinese and Western literary research and approaches.
