SummaryThe course will be taught in larger groups for introduction of language skills and grammars while separate oral tutorials will entail smaller groups. In the tutorials, students will be able to practice speaking and writing tutorials. Classes will be conducted in an interactive manner, combining PowerPoint presentations by the instructor and role play among students.
This course is a semester long and runs in semester 1. On successful completion of the course students will have the option of taking Korean Language Beginner 2 in the semester 2, which follows on from Korean Language Beginner 1 in the semester 1.
Course description The course will be taught in larger groups while separate oral tutorials will entail smaller groups. In the tutorials, students will be able to practice speaking and writing tutorials. Classes will be conducted in an interactive manner, combining PowerPoint presentations by the instructor and role play among students. Students will learn the Korean script (Hangul) and will acquire a vocabulary of 600/700 Korean words. Students will also learn how to comprehend and compose short pages in Korean. Topics covered throughout the course will include location, number, daily routines, making plans, means of transportation, formal style and shopping.
Korean Language Beginner 1 is taught through a series of classes focused on different aspects of language learning. These classes are expected to be supplemented by individual study. The teaching activities will follow this pattern on a weekly basis:
- Conversation and Grammar class covers the Conversation and Grammar section of the textbooks.
- Reading and Writing class covers the Reading and Writing section of the textbooks.
- Workbook tutorial covers the Workbooks of the textbooks.

Prohibited Combinations Students MUST NOT also be taking Korean Language Beginner 2 (ASST11119)
Other requirements This course is a semester long and designed for absolute beginners to the Korean language. On successful completion of the course students will have the option of taking Korean Language Beginner 2. However, these two course MUST NOT be taken in the same semester/at the same time.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Read and comprehend short, simple texts written in the Korean script (Hangul)
  2. Comprehend basic audio passages of Korean language being spoken at a natural pace
  3. Communicate at an elementary level of Korean in situations of daily routine, such as introducing oneself and making telephone calls
  4. Observe basic Korean cultural customs, such as how to greet someone, what to say before eating meals, etc.
