SummaryThis course allows students to draw on their knowledge, understanding and experience to critically describe the potential future impact of a particular area of biomedical science. Students will also reflect on their experiences on their UG programme and demonstrate how this reflection will inform their future practice.
Course description Students will choose an area of scientific research and describe in ¿big picture¿ terms the future potential of that research on health/well-being. Ethical aspects must also be discussed. In order to do this, the student will need to draw on a depth and breadth of understanding and take a creative but realistic approach in translating this knowledge and understanding into potential future advances. Students should consider what could enhanced scientific understanding of the area contribute to society, and what are the benefits of, and major obstacles to, achieving that?

Students will also critically evaluate and reflect on what was helpful to them in their programme (e.g., learning a skill or technique, an insight into scientific method/practice, etc.), what impact those activities had on them, and how this will influence their future practice.

Additional Information (Assessment) Single written ICA (~1600 words): 50% on future potential impact of a topic/field; 50% reflective discussion.
Feedback Students will be invited to submit a draft answer/plan to their tutor for formative feedback ~5 weeks before the submission deadline for the summative answer. In addition to feedback from the tutor, we will invite students to participate in a short workshop with their group where they peer-review and discuss their drafts and feedback, facilitated by their tutor.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Use broad, in-depth and up-to-date scientific knowledge, including experimental evidence, to critically discuss the future potential impact on human health or well-being of a particular topic or field in biomedical sciences.
  2. Critically discuss ethical aspects of this potential future impact.
  3. Critically evaluate and reflect on what was helpful to you in your programme, and demonstrate how this will influence your future practice.
