SummaryThis course will allow you to participate in the GloWD 2022 GEL-Lab Design Studio initiative: an international platform for rethinking visual literacy and structuring hands-on design education within the globally collaborative context of a design studio. It provides an international, collaborative multidisciplinary experience where an institution's instructor and students are integrated into diverse (geographic, institutional, disciplinary) global GEL-Lab teams for the duration of the design studio.
This is a trans-disciplinary course that allows students to participate in unique International Engagement initiatives and activities across ECA Subject Areas. It provides you with a suitable academic framework to propose, develop and manage your learning experience. With support from an academic tutor, this Student-Led Individually Created Course (SLICC) gives you autonomy and ownership to enable you to develop a reflective portfolio of your learning.
Course description For 2022/23, this course allows students to participate in the GloWD 2022 GEL-Lab Design Studio initiative: an international platform for rethinking visual literacy and structuring hands-on design education within the globally collaborative context of a design studio. Within this platform, participating ECA students and tutors will be integrated into a collaborative team with other students and tutors from a range of geographic, institutional and disciplinary backgrounds. A key dimension of this studio-based learning experience is its international, experimental and trans-disciplinary scope across ECA Subject Areas, providing a platform for identifying and addressing pressing global design problems within a radically collaborative framework.
This course offers a trans-disciplinary learning framework to integrate International Engagement initiatives into your academic learning. Operating across ECA Subject Areas, it provides an opportunity to acquire academic, professional and personal skills beyond the University, while simultaneously providing you with a suitable structure to critically reflect on and self-assess your learning experience.
As a Student-Led Individually Created Course (SLICC) you will setup your goals at the start of the semester. You will be assigned a tutor which will help with setting these goals and evaluating the progress throughout the semester. There is an interim report on progress in the middle of the semester which is submitted to be reviewed by the tutor. At the end of the semester, the assessment is done via a self-reflection essay submitted to the tutor.

Additional Information (Assessment) This course is a student-led project with points of engagement with a designated tutor. Assessment is carried out 100% through coursework. The split is as follows:
20% Interim Report
80% SLICC "Final Reflective Report"
Both Components of Assessment are marked against all Learning Outcomes.
Feedback Students will receive:
- Formative feedback on their initial Reflective Learning Proposal (where their goals are set)
- Both formative and summative feedback on their mid-term Interim Report (where progress is reflected upon)
- Summative feedback on their self-reflection essay (which includes self-assessment of their learning)

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Develop a critical understanding of the key topics that shape your particular international engagement initiative
  2. Apply substantive academic, personal or professional skills to engage with the international engagement initiative
  3. Reflect upon and convey the development of skills in research, enquiry and communication gained through participation in the international engagement initiative
  4. Gain insight into existing outlooks and mindsets in relation to the international engagement initiative, and use these to reflect on and articulate future aspirations
  5. Develop and reflect upon a portfolio of professional and personal learning
Learning Resources
The SLICC framework provides a range of online tools and learning resources to support students undertaking self-designed learning.
In addition, participation in the relevant International Engagement initiative will require you (alongside your tutor) to identify your intended reading and range of resources to support your independent learning.
