SummaryThe emphasis of this course is the early years of life, promoting awareness of factors which can either enhance or negatively impact upon a child's psychological/emotional development. The course will equip students with knowledge of these social, psychological and biological risk and protective factors, and understanding of how these inform early intervention frameworks.

The course will also focus on training students in empowering children, young people and families to recognise their strengths and develop resilience. Through evidence-based models of intervention, students will learn how vulnerable families can be helped to foster positive relationships (including positive parenting), utilise support in their community and from professional systems.

The early management of developmental psychopathology and difficulties in children and young people will also be covered.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the interpersonal, societal, cultural and biological factors which underpin the presentation of clients' difficulties.
  2. Show critical awareness of risk and protective factors in the assessment of, and intervention for problems occurring early in the life cycle, and early in the problem cycle.
  3. Use a range of evidence based psychological approaches to assess, formulate and plan appropriate and flexible treatment interventions.
  4. Use a range of communicative skills and psychological techniques to implement interventions through and with other professionals for the benefit of clients, their carers (formal and informal), or within systems.
  5. Draw on critical reflections of their own professional role and responsibilities to recognise when intervention is inappropriate, or where further intervention is inappropriate.
