|Summary||Students will develop a rigorous first hand understanding of the relationships between sound and vision in relation to the graphic design industry. The student will explore and understand sound design, field recording, working with voice talent and editing sound. The student will develop a digital presentation which incorporates sound, typography and motion graphics.
Over the 10 weeks of this course students will explore the visualization of sound utilizing relevant graphic techniques. Students will also explore relevant historical theory within contemporary practice-based experimentation. Most of this work will be process driven as the student develops a personal voice. This will be supported by a critical stance within the discipline. It is assumed these techniques could support a wide variety of design solutions for example online advertising, motion graphic title sequence or avant-garde installation work.
Outline of Content:
Week 1: Formulate plan. What will be the focus of your project? Why do you want to explore this and how might you approach the project?
Weeks 2 & 3: Explore, experiment and develop ideas, supported by sound design and animation technique workshops
Week 4: Peer group presentation, Pecha Kucha 20x20 format, of completed soundtrack and storyboard
Week 5: MIDPOINT formative review
Weeks 6, 7 & 8: Production of visuals supported by motion graphics training / workshops
Week 9: Final motion graphic should be refined
Week 10: Final presentation and reflective summary of project presented at a formal crit
Final Week : Summative Assessment
The initial development and body of research as well as a series of digital sound and moving image experiments are as equally important as the final design work. All development and historical context should be recorded in a research blog which is annotated with personal and critically reflective observations.
