|Summary||The purpose of this course is to develop understanding of some of the processes involved in leading strategic change initiatives in organisations operating within creative industries. The course will seek to fully expose the messy, non-linear ways in which change usually takes place, and the importance of change leaders in understanding the contextual imperatives that will play a defining role in the change process.
We will draw upon a variety of frameworks, theories and conceptual approaches to develop understanding of how leaders can effectively realise strategic change in the creative industries.
The class will cover the following topics:
(1) Understanding mental models;
(2) Constructing a change vision;
(3) Diagnosing change;
(5) Change resistance;
(6) Change implementation;
(7) Sustaining change.
These topics will be explored using cases located in the creative industries. We will also draw on experienced practitioners to provide insight into their own experiences of leading change.
The course is based on an intensive 2-day model. It is divided into the following three components:
1) Pre-intensive independent learning: The purpose of this section is acquisition of understanding of some of the main ideas associated with the formulation and implementation of change leadership.
2) Two-day intensive learning: This component will focus on the theory and practice of change. It will comprise of a combination of lectures, guest presentations, discussions, and group work.
3) Post-intensive independent learning: This component will focus on the preparation of the individual assignment. The students will be supported by the course organiser and a teaching assistant through an online discussion board, email and synchronous Q&A sessions that will potentially be delivered twice if needed to cover multiple time zones.
The student experience for all students will combine independent learning with group activities and discussions offline and online to create an active and collaborative learning environment for both synchronous and asynchronous students. Students will be able to submit questions beforehand if unable to attend synchronous sessions, and the sessions will be recorded. Similarly during the intensive days, all lectures, including those of guest speakers, will be recorded and shared, and students can submit questions before and after the sessions which will be addressed either during the sessions or on a collaborative learning platform after the sessions.
Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI) - On-Site Fusion Course Delivery Information:
The Edinburgh Futures Institute will teach this course in a way that enables online and on-campus students to study together. This approach (our 'fusion' teaching model) offers students flexible and inclusive ways to study, and the ability to choose whether to be on-campus or online at the level of the individual course. It also opens up ways for diverse groups of students to study together regardless of geographical location. To enable this, the course will use technologies to record and live-stream student and staff participation during their teaching and learning activities.
Students should be aware that:
- Classrooms used in this course will have additional technology in place: students might not be able to sit in areas away from microphones or outside the field of view of all cameras.
- Unless the lecturer or tutor indicates otherwise you should assume the session is being recorded.
As part of your course, you will need access to a personal computing device. Unless otherwise stated activities will be web browser based and as a minimum we recommend a device with a physical keyboard and screen that can access the internet.

The course will be assessed by means of the following components:
1) 2000 Word Essay (100%)
The assignment for this course will be a 2000 word paper that will allow you to reflect on a major change experience related to the creative industries of which you have detailed understanding. This issue must be cleared with the course leader by submitting a one page summary by email.
The change should be significant enough to allow for sufficient engagement, both with the practical situation and the concepts covered in the class (not all of these need to be identified in the initial summary). The transformation does not need to be successful in outcome but must explain why specific events unfurled in particular ways, and what lessons can be learned from the analyses.
Each course within Edinburgh Futures Institute includes the opportunity for you to participate in a formative feedback exercise or event which will help you prepare for your summative assessment. The formative assessment does not contribute to your overall course mark.
1) Initial One Page Essay Proposal
||Feedback on the formative assessment may be provided in various formats, for example, to include written, oral, video, face-to-face, whole class, or individual. The course organiser will decide which format is most appropriate in relation to the nature of the assessment.
Feedback on both formative and summative in-course assessed work will be provided in time to be of use in subsequent assessments within the course.
Feedback on the summative assessment will be provided in written form via Learn, the University of Edinburgh's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
Formative feedback will be provided on the initial one page proposal and on the various discussions that take place through the course.
Formative and summative feedback will be provided on the final essay.
