| Summary | A course for students with a National 5 / GCSE / Standard Grade / Foundation 1 or CEFR A1/A1+ in French who wish to improve.
1. Auditing (Class Only) is not allowed. All students must take all elements of assessment.
2. Students will be assigned a group and each group has two classes a week. You must be able to attend both classes in order to take the course.
3. Students with a higher level of the language than stated above are not permitted and may be asked to withdraw from the course.
This course runs both in semester 1 and semester 2.
On successful completion of the course students will be eligible to take Foundation French 3.
NB: If you intend to sign up to Foundation French 3 in semester 2 after completing this course in semester 1 we advise you to enroll on both courses at the start of the year. These courses are in high demand. |
| Course description |
Foundation French 2 is a ten-week course which runs in Semester 1 and Semester 2.
This is an SCQF Level 7 course, which carries 20 credits. Students may take this course for extra credit. The course is open for undergraduate and postgraduate students from all Colleges, whether for credit or as an extra credit course. Please note: Students from DELC have to do this course as an extra credit course.
Foundation French Language 2 is a communicative course aimed at developing your understanding and production of the language at CEFR level A1/A2. The course is composed of 2 classes per week. Classes will be taught on campus, according to your timetable.
We aim to practise the 4 skills necessary to Language Learning : Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. In class you will work as a whole group or in smaller groups or pairs to allow for speaking practice and consolidation of the language structures studied. You will cover a variety of everyday topics such as introducing yourself, talking about your past experiences, describing another person, talking about your family, your work or your personal projects.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Knowledge and Understanding: Students will continue to develop their knowledge and understanding of the language up to the level equivalent to A1/A2 CFR. Their vocabulary will reach approximately 1000 words and phrases.
- Practice and Applied Knowledge, Skills and Understanding: Students continue to develop grammar, oral and aural skills as well as the ability to use them in a variety of situations. Students can produce oral and written phrases, and understand short to medium length passages.
- Generic Cognitive Skills: The students will develop the skill of using known material to make appropriate deductions and informed guesses about the meaning of material that is new to them. They can apply strategies for understanding specific information on a variety of topics.
- Communication, ICT and Numeracy Skills: Ability to conduct more complex conversations on a wider range of topics. Students will be able to communicate at a level equivalent to CEFR (A2) in the target language (both written and oral) in situations of daily routine and familiar topics. They will be able to ask and answer questions in areas of immediate need or on familiar and routine topics. The students continue to progress from learned formulaic responses towards a more spontaneous generation of language.
- Autonomy, Accountability and Working with Others: The course continues to develop confidence in language learning, understanding and responding to others in appropriate situations. Students continue to work individually as well as in pairs or small groups.
