| Summary | Foundation French Language 4 is a course that helps students to acquire more complex language structures and express themselves in a more nuanced manner than in previous levels FF2 (CEFR level A2) and FF3 (CEFR level A2, start of B1). It will allow them to cope with most situations they are likely to encounter whilst travelling in a French-speaking country or when interacting with sympathetic native speakers. Students will engage with more complex tasks such as presenting a specific topic of interest to the class, or expressing their opinion on a topical or a cultural issue. |
| Course description |
Foundation French Language 4 is a semester-long course that aims to take students to approximately CEFR Level B1.
Students discuss a selection of themes that are contemporary and cultural in focus, and concentrate learning about the French-speaking world.
Students develop their listening comprehension skills as well as their awareness of the linguistic variation within the French-speaking world by being exposed to texts and online clips in different varieties of the language.
Students develop their reading comprehension skills whilst engaging with a variety of texts in French.
Students practise writing short pieces of prose text on familiar and topical issues.
Students reflect on the use of grammar in written and oral texts and acquire grammatical structures and vocabulary, which they can then apply in the production of both written and spoken language.
Students are expected to prepare for each class by going through the explanations given in the previous class and completing the corresponding exercises in their activity book; this is essential to their progress and mastery of the new structures.
Regular attendance at all classes and the completion of all set work, including formative homework exercises, is vital for the successful attainment of the course.
Self-study is an essential part of learning a foreign language. In order to structure this process, students should keep track of their progress towards meeting the learning outcomes.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Communicate information on familiar matters and express thoughts on social issues and cultural topics.
- Understand straightforward factual information about common everyday or university-related topics, identifying both general messages and specific details, provided speech is clearly articulated in a familiar accent.
- Comprehend straightforward factual texts on subjects related to the university context and matters of common interest.
- Compose a variety of types of texts in French on a range of familiar subjects.

The study of French at level Foundation 4 will allow students to:
Develop their communicative skills through working with others and consolidating their aural skills in the target language.
Analyse, summarise and express their opinion on a range of topical issues (the professional world, the environment¿etc) through completing various writing and speaking tasks.
Gain confidence in all four skills of the target language (reading, listening, writing and speaking), the students will be able to convey more complex ideas than in previous levels.
Develop their ICT skills through working on the tasks set up by their tutor. |
