SummaryThis course will introduce major topics in Brazilian literature and culture since the country's independence in 1822. A selection of texts/films will be studied in the context of historical and political events. Particular attention will be paid to the following themes: nation-building, post-colonialism and race; regionalism; gender and sexuality; post-modernism, revolution and ideology. These topics will allow the student to think and write comparatively, and to combine detailed textual analysis with theoretical debate and a consideration of historical and cultural factors. Background information and relevant aspects of critical theory will be examined during seminars. Classes will be a mixture of lecture, seminar and student-led discussion in both Portuguese and English.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Grasp major themes and trends in Brazilian cultural expression from the Independence period to the present in a variety of genres
  2. Evaluate the ways in which different genres and the diversity of Brazilian culture makes possible different modes of engagement with these genres
  3. Analyse Brazilian cultural materials using critical and theoretical methodologies to substantiate and illustrate arguments
  4. improve their skills of literary/filmic criticism and theoretical anlysis
  5. enhance their communication skills through a variety of techniques, from essay writing, commentary analysis to oral presentations
