SummaryA course for beginners with no previous knowledge of Italian, designed to give complete beginners a basic, working knowledge of spoken and written Italian.

1. Auditing (Class Only) is not allowed. All students must take all elements of assessment, including the examination.

2. Students will be assigned a group and each group has two classes a week. You must be able to attend both classes in order to take the course.

3. Students with previous knowledge of the language are not permitted and may be asked to withdraw from the course.

This course runs in semester 1 and semester 2.

On successful completion of the course students will be eligible to take Foundation Italian 2.
Course description Foundation Italian Language 1 is a communicative course aimed at developing your understanding and production of the language at CEFR level A1/A1+. Thera are 2 classes per week. Each class has an autonomous learning component and consists of a live tutorial.
The self-study component allows you to start working through the course material independently and to prepare for the live session. The tutorials will help you to consolidate your understanding and your use of new linguistic content. Focusing on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, the live sessions with the tutors will give you the opportunity to practise the language in small activity groups on a variety of everyday topics.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. communicate in Italian at approximately level A1/1+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (for example: introduce yourself and others; ask and answer questions about personal details; talk about events in the past);
  2. draw on a vocabulary of 600/700 words to speak on personal topics and in contexts of daily routine; apply a basic knowledge of grammar appropriate to the level;
  3. produce and read texts on familiar everyday topics;
  4. comprehend short listening passages where the context is familiar and formulate answers to linked comprehension questions;
  5. develop confidence in language learning, understanding and responding to others in appropriate situations; learn to work autonomously individually as well as in pairs or small groups; develop intercultural awareness skills.
