| Summary | A compulsory course for MEL Single Honours in Italian and MEL+OSNAL (Other Subject Not A Language) students, which carries 10 credits and aims to build on students' understanding of a variety of Italian texts, analysing registers, idioms and styles, and to enhance their ability to translate them appropriately into English.

| Course description |
With an emphasis on practical translation skills, students will evaluate translation strategies and solutions in class activities and use comparative analysis of published translations to gain awareness of active reading and an understanding of the challenges of translation. Aspects of translation theory will be discussed occasionally.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Analyse a range of Italian texts and show an advanced knowledge of the language and cultural references.
- Distinguish between different styles, registers, idioms, nuances and target readerships in the Italian source text and demonstrate awareness of these in the English translation.
- Develop active reading as a way to recognise the problems of translation and adopt strategies and acquire the skills to convey register, idiom, cultural references, stylistic devices and ambiguity in translation practice.
- Reflect on personal translation practice involving the translation of complex Italian texts into English prose.
- Negotiate and resolve translation problems while working in a group in order to develop further transferable skills.
