|Summary||This course is a requirement for students of Norwegian on their Year Abroad. The online course will provide an interactive language-learning tool to consolidate and extend the language skills acquired during the Year 1 and Year 2 language courses, enabling students to further develop and practise their comprehension (reading and aural) skills and advanced writing skills in Norwegian in preparation for the more advanced language study of Year 4. Students will aim to achieve CEFR C-1 level by the end of the course.
The course is entirely taught and delivered online. It will take approximately between 40 and 80 hours to complete and will open at the start of Semester 1 and close at the end of Semester 2.
The course will be interactive, marked through autocorrection; the final language assignment will be marked by University of Edinburgh staff. Students will be expected to engage with their learning independently and organise their own study time. They will receive constructive feedback online to enable them to consolidate and progress to the next level of the course.
Students on this course will be working with a wide range of texts in Norwegian in order to recognise explicit and implicit meaning and make connections with the culture and the society in which they are immersed during their Year Abroad. They will also practise expressing themselves in complex language in a range of different registers through different interactive writing online tools (e.g. blogs, discussion boards) using the target language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Students will also aim to produce clear, well-structured, detailed writing assignments showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
Students are required to complete four different modules (A, B, C and D). Each module focuses on a number of written, audio and/or video documents. These resources will allow students to further develop their vocabulary, syntax and idiomatic use of the language. To complete each module, students are required to submit answers for a set of automatically graded activities. These will test the students' knowledge of Norwegian linguistic competence as well as their listening and comprehension skills.
Students will also need to complete written expression activities interacting with their peers through, for example, online blogs, discussion boards, or wikis.
At the end of the course, students are required to submit one language assignment based on the completed modules. In their language assignment, students will be able to apply the skills developed whilst completing the 4 online modules. The assignment will be assessed on linguistic criteria (range, fluency and accuracy of language) and on the quality of the content (knowledge of the topic, independence and originality of thought, analytical skills).
The assignment will be submitted to a deadline at the end of Year 3. It may not be submitted more than 4 weeks before the deadline.

(30% online coursework (automatically graded tests and written expression activities; 70% language assignment (approx. 600 words)).
||Students will gain online feedback through the interactive language-learning programme. This will be progressive as the student works through the course and the student will be able to autocorrect.
Feedback will also be provided on the final language assignment by a University of Edinburgh tutor.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a broad range of Norwegian vocabulary with a good degree of grammatical accuracy.
- Engage with and understand complex texts, written in the target language.
- Produce clear, complex reports, articles and essays, which develop arguments both critically and systematically with the use of relevant emphases, subsidiary points, and examples.
- Demonstrate well-honed communication, presentation and interaction skills across a wide range of media and circumstances.
- Exercise autonomy and initiative in language-learning.
