|Summary||This course is the first of four Family Medicine courses building the skill base for Family Medicine practitioners working in a variety of clinical settings in countries across the world.
The course covers the medical specialities that are commonly encountered in primary care. The clinical content is supplemented by academic information on the Principles or Family Medicine with emphasis on the unique approach to the patient including elements of patient-centred and holistic care. The course builds a competency level in managing common medical problems approaching them in a systematic, problem-orientated way. Students will be able to recognise and manage common problems whilst being aware of when they need to access the wider resources available to them and when to appropriately refer to specialist care.
The course will begin by exploring the basic principles and concepts of family medicine through examining key papers and relating the finding to clinical scenarios.
Through group work students will then explore in depth common medical specialties that are normally encountered in primary care.
Students will also complete a reflective learning log every week.
