SummaryThe Biomedical Informatics Synoptic Assignment is an opportunity for students to consolidate the skills and knowledge learnt throughout the BMI programme, and apply them to a project representative of what a biomedical informatician would encounter in their professional practice. This may include the analysis of a publicly available dataset to address a biomedical question, or the production of a piece of software for biomedical analysis. Students work on the project intensively during a 2-week ¿hackathon¿, at the end of which they have to submit both their code, and a reflective description of the underlying biomedical questions, their approach, and their outcomes. During that time, faculty contact is frequent, but unstructured, allowing students to work independently, but draw on faculty expertise as needed.
Course description Biomedical informaticians, in all kinds of roles, need to be able to quickly understand the biomedical basis of a problem, design and implement a solution, and document both their process and outcomes in a way that is accessible to co-workers and other stakeholders. This course gives you an opportunity to do this. You will be given a problem from biomedical informatics (or you can choose your own), and work on it during a focused 2-week hackathon. Faculty will be available for discussions and questions throughout the hackathon.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Independently develop innovative computational- and informatics-based approaches to solve a biomedical problem based on real-world data.
  2. Employ an appropriate approach to develop code to address a biomedical problem, and accurately document this development.
  3. Manage a project, work independently, and communicate with relevant project stakeholders.
