| Course description |
1) Persian 1 A for PG Credit is an elementary course in Persian language. It is a course in spoken and written modern Persian. It is worth 20 credits and runs in Semester 1 only. No previous knowledge of Persian is required for entry to the course. This course is designed to introduce students to the Persian language. The course teaches how to read and write the Persian script and introduces the main features of Persian grammar together with a basic vocabulary. It is designed to provide students with the key tools to understand, speak, read and write elementary Persian.
2) Content: The course follows a combination grammar and oral lessons. Students will learn how to use Persian grammar and vocabulary related to basic topics such as greeting, family, food, weather, seasons, colours, and home; conduct basic social conversations; extract information from short text, and write short passages in Persian. Students will also be exposed to Persian history and culture through sample readings, discussions, and other activities.
3) Learning experience: Students normally (pre-Covid 19) take 5 hours of contact per week on different skills of language. They also engage with weekly homework assignments, including grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing and listening assignments; quizzes and online content.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand basic structures of Persian grammar, script and pronunciation.
- Identify, describe and manipulate a range of basic linguistic forms and structures in reading, writing, and conversation.
- Read elementary texts in Persian (50-70 words) and start basic conversation in elementary Persian.
- Write grammatically sound sentences and communicate basic information in writing
- Acquire a basic knowledge of Iranian culture as learning Persian takes place against a context of Persian culture and civilization.
