SummaryThis text based course will focus on Latin historiography of the classical period. Certain works will be prescribed reading.
Course description This course will study the principles and methods of Roman historiography. The course will cover both the literary and ideological aspects of the genre and the problems with using the genre as a source. The texts to be studied will depend on the research interests of the lecturer.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: ( Latin 2A (LATI08011) OR Latin 2a Ex-Beginners (LATI08013)) AND Latin 2B (LATI08012)

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should usually have at least 3 courses in Classics related subject matter (at least 2 of which should be in Latin) at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this) for entry to this course. We will only consider University/College level courses but Elementary or Intermediate Latin courses will not count. Students beyond Intermediate level but with less Latin than the prerequisite should consider taking either Latin 2A/2B.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. demonstrate, by way of class discussion, a coursework essay and a written exam that they are acquainted with the principles of classical Latin historiography, and with the literary, aesthetic and ideological nature of that literature;
  2. demonstrate, by way of class discussion, a coursework essay and a written exam that they are aware of the opportunities and problems involved in using historiography as a historical source;
  3. demonstrate, by way of class discussion, a coursework essay and a written exam that they have read in Latin an extensive prescription of classical historiography, with due attention to linguistic and stylistic detail, literary technique, and historical context;
  4. demonstrate, by way of class discussion, a coursework essay and a written exam that they are able to discuss critically interpretative issues which arise from the texts and from a range of scholarship.
