|Summary||The objectives of this course are to develop an understanding of the concepts, tools and practices relating to the operations of an organisation, with particular emphasis upon manufacturing, and also the ability to diagnose operational dysfunction and suggest possible solutions. It examines the process nature of operations, the strategic importance of operations and the issues influencing efficient, effective and adaptable operations.
This course provides a practical orientated course on Operations Management. It covers the topics of: Operations as a process, Work place design, Planning systems, Environmental & quality management, A role for technology, Design and its management, Supply chain management, Operations strategy, Japanese approaches, Newer approaches to operations, Corporate social responsibility. Whilst the emphasis is upon manufacturing contexts, the material is appropriate for any operational contexts, such as services.
Student understanding of the course content is assessed by the submission of a report at the end of the course which examines a real world operations (e.g. a kitchen, kilt-maker, bakery, factory), evaluates appropriate academic literatures and proposes a meaningful solution in terms of its suitability and feasibility. This assessment is explained in the first session. Students are expected to find their own operations case-study.

1. describe the key operations management concepts covered
2. critically discuss the application of these concepts
3. demonstrate that they can:
a) describe an operations scenario
b) critically evaluate this scenario
c) propose how these operations can be improved using the concepts covered during the course, explaining why the chosen option has been selected over others.
