SummaryThe course allows the student to study two topic areas related to paediatric emergency medicine in-depth. This will allow an in-depth exploration of the topic, yet facilitate independent investigation.
Course description Students will be provided with a list of topic areas, from which they will rank their preferences. Students will be allocated to 2 groups based on their preferences. Where possible, students will be allocated to their preferred choices, but this ultimately will be based on overall student preferences.

Within their assigned groups, students will produce a poster relevant to the topic area. Individually students will submit detailed discussion posts, assignment (essay format) and 360 degree appraisals of their individual group dynamics.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Fundamentals in Paediatric Emergency Medicine 1 (PECM11001) AND Fundamentals in Paediatric Emergency Medicine 2 (PECM11002) AND Fundamentals in Paediatric Emergency Medicine 3 (PECM11003) AND Paediatric Medical Emergencies (PECM11004) AND Surgical Emergencies & Trauma/ Anaesthesia & Sedation (PECM11005)

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand the theoretical framework underpinning current practice in paediatric emergency medicine as it relates to the chosen topics (knowledge and understanding)
  2. Analyse the literature to enable developments in knowledge to be implemented in the clinical setting (apply knowledge)
  3. Understand the complex interpersonal relationships and leadership skills required to practice in a multidisciplinary environment (making judgements)
  4. Present cogent arguments for a chosen line of management based on analysis of the available evidence (communication skills
  5. Identify learning needs and how to address these, to facilitate their own personal professional development (learning skills) and identify benefits and difficulties of group work (team working)
