SummaryShort research project, undertaken as a preparation for the main project leading to MSc Dissertation (except for Diploma students).
Course description Pre-dissertation work commences at the start of semester 2, and encompasses active preparation work for the MSc dissertation itself, i.e. preliminary study of the topic and ensuring that key components and equipment are ready for the main work on the dissertation starting after the Semester 2 exams. The general intention of the Pre-dissertation is therefore to define the dissertation related research in more detail and to foresee and avoid potential problems, delays and difficulties that may arise, e.g. in untested experimental procedures or ambitious computer modelling. The assessment breakdown is 100% based on the submitted report.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. report a preliminary investigation of a complex research topic
  2. make interim conclusions about a complex research question
  3. learn to identify and prioritise the key sub-topics relevant to their chosen topic of research for further detailed investigation
  4. develop a coherent and structured research plan identifying resource requirements and potential constraints/pitfalls
