SummaryThe course covers the fundamentals of how digital technologies create and manipulate shapes for design and manufacturing applications. The course will introduce the main geometric representations and the algorithms used to support their use in various industrial manufacturing and design applications. The relative strengths and weakness of different representations will be discussed.
Course description The fundamentals of geometric reasoning will be introduced and a number of case studies will be used to illustrate the capabilities and limitations of current software. A number of different commercial and open-source software platforms will be used to support a series of computing laboratory session that develop both the students┬┐ knowledge and experience of geometric computing.

The course will be developed to facilitate hybrid teaching and will compromise a series of 8 x 3 hour workshop sessions that will encourage student-centred learning. A combination of technical lectures, geometric programming exercises (for design & manufacturing applications) will be employed to allow students to make informed decisions regarding the selection and effective implementation shape representations appropriate to a particular application.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand/implement computer models of 3D shape using a number of different representations;
  2. Discuss and demonstrate the capabilities and limitation of the geometric algorithms and reasoning system employed in industrial applications;
  3. Discuss and evaluate geometric engineering data management issues across an engineering enterprise;
  4. Demonstrate an appreciation of the complex relationship between geometry, topology and computational technology.
