SummaryThe class will explore the use of masculinity/femininity and gender in the pathologization of racialized males in the U.S. and abroad.
Course description This class will trace the development of the gender analytic from the end of 19th century ethnology to 20th century social scientific discourses of Black male deficit. Particular attention will be paid to the work of criminologists of the 1970s and their contribution to modern feminist literature concerning the idea of Black masculinity in contemporary gender theory. This course will examine multiple theories discussing racist violence and caricatures against males including Errol Miller¿s Male Marginalization Thesis, Jim Sidanius¿s Subordinate Male Target Hypothesis, Anthony Lemelle Jr.¿s Feminization Thesis, and Tommy J. Curry¿s Theory of Misandric Aggression.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Explain influential positions and arguments concerning the development of the Black Male Studies.
  2. Critically assess these positions and arguments, drawing their own reasoned conclusions about their defensibility
  3. Explain the weakness and strengths of Social Dominance Theory compared to intersectionality and distinctions between misandric aggression and outgroup bias
  4. Better articulate their own views regarding the social scientific basis of modern gender theory
  5. Participate more meaningfully in discussions concerning intra-racial and inter-racial violence concerning Black males and their rates of victimization to sexual violence.
