SummaryThis course, together with course Physics Year Abroad Level 11 (which must also be taken), constitutes 12 months full-time study at an approved university/research facility outside the UK. The two courses are Year 4 curricula for students on the MPhys degree programme Physics with a Year Abroad. During the period students undertake an extended research project on a topic agreed with their host supervisor. Taught courses may also be attended and may be chosen from those available at the university at an appropriate level and relevance to students' interests and degree programme. Assessment consists of a literature survey related to the project, a written project report, an oral presentation and aspects of performance in the project.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the Year Abroad course, it is expected that students will:
1. execute a significant research project within the discipline of physics;
2. demonstrate a critical understanding of the background, theories and concepts relating to the work undertaken during the year;
3. demonstrate competence in a range of routine and advanced skills (technical, IT, etc.) appropriate to the project;
4. successfully communicate formally (presentations, reports, etc) and informally with peers and specialists within the work environment;
5. consolidate on academic physics covered in earlier parts of the degree programme;
6. develop and enhance understanding of the culture of the host country over an extended period.
