SummaryThis 20-credit level 11 course provides a detailed understanding of the observational properties of galaxies across cosmic time, the modelling techniques required to interpret the observations, and the theoretical understanding of the galaxy formation and evolution process that results. It places galaxies within a standard hierarchical paradigm of structure formation, and discusses the key baryonic processes responsible for the formation and evolution of galaxies, including feedback mechanisms and the role of active galactic nuclei. The course builds naturally upon the pre-requisite Astrophysics: Galaxies and Cosmology level 10 course, which reviews the key concepts of observational astronomy related to galaxies.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: ( Astrophysics (PHYS10102) AND Cosmology (PHYS10101)) OR Astrophysics: Galaxies and Cosmology (PHYS10112)
It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed Astrophysics: Stars and Planets (PHYS10111) AND Statistical Physics (PHYS11024)

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Explain the nature of galaxies, their formation and their evolution across cosmic time.
  2. Employ modelling techniques to interpret the observations and set these within a theoretical framework.
  3. Apply knowledge of core concepts in physics to derive detailed astrophysical properties of galaxies and formulate solutions to unseen astrophysical problems related to galaxies
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of the frontiers of the discipline, for example, through cases where current theories fail to explain a set of observational data.
  5. Demonstrate a high degree of independence in learning and retrieving information on galaxy formation and evolution from the primary research literature, books and other sources.
