|Summary||The course will begin by providing a grounding in the key principles and concepts of health promotion, followed by a critical introduction to a range of health promotion strategies and action. It will introduce and provoke discussion of determinants of health at different levels, drawing on theory related to intervening at each level. It will introduce and encourage critical reflection on models for planning health promotion and approaches for evaluating health promotion. Examples of good practice will be used to illustrate and explore key issues, and a variety of current health promotion concerns will enhance the course¿s relevance to contemporary health promotion.
This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the theoretical and empirical basis of health promotion, and enable them to plan and evaluate health promotion policies and programmes.
The course will be structured into the following topics:
1. Introduction to the course; concepts of health and health promotion; models and approaches to health education
2. Determinants of health actions
3. Health promotion planning and evaluation part 1
4. Health promotion planning and evaluation part 2
5. Community health promotion

||a) Group presentation: focusing on key components involved in planning a health promotion intervention (30% of the overall grade for the course)
b) Written essay: focusing on critical reflection on the challenges of planning a health promotion intervention (70% of the overall grade for the course)
||Students will receive formative or summative feedback on all assessed pieces of work.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the underlying principles, key concepts and relevant theories of health promotion.
- Apply knowledge and understanding to plan a health promotion intervention and evaluation, and critically reflect on the challenges.
- dentify, define and critically compare key strategies and approaches to health promotion policy and practice.
- Work collaboratively with peers to apply and communicate key health promotion principles and concepts.
|The theory and practice of health promotion draw on a wide range of disciplines including epidemiology, sociology, education, psychology, marketing, management, economics, politics. There is therefore no single text that encompasses all these aspects in depth; however several books give good overviews and there are also several books that focus on health promotion planning and/or evaluation.|
