SummaryThis course is open to Senior Honours students who want to present the findings of their Sociology project to a wider audience. Students are required to prepare a short (12 minute) oral presentation to be delivered to an audience of Sociology staff and students, and to produce a large (A0) poster for display. The preparation classes give students the necessary skills to make effective oral presentations and create attractive and informative posters, including training in two software packages. The course is usually taken by a relatively small number of students (8-12), which creates a learning community in which mutual support is often as important as formal training. Assessment is completed in week 11 of the semester.
Course description This course will prepare students to give a short oral presentation based on their Sociology Honours project, and to answer questions arising from this presentation. In addition, students are introduced design fundamentals that allow them to prepare a sociological research poster. This course is intended to enhance student oral presentation skills and to provide training in the use of audio-visual technology to support oral presentations. Students will gain hands-on experience with PowerPoint and other presentation software, including WordPress.
