SummaryThis optional course in the final honours year provides opportunities for small groups of students to devise a realistic proposal for a sport development charity or business capable of delivering sporting and social objectives. Set within critical scholarship on social enterprise and social innovation, the course builds upon courses undertaken throughout the sport management programme and utilises a "Project Based Learning" approach which encourages students to learn independently about real-world issues facing sport social entrepreneurs.
Course description This course will develop knowledge and application of the political, financial, policy, management, marketing, legal and evaluation issues facing social enterprises will be needed to underpin a convincing business proposal for a sustainable sport development charity or business.
Students will be provided with a theoretical and practical framework for developing their start-up and, while weekly workshops will have staff support, they will be student-led, with students encouraged to seek answers to questions about their project through their own efforts. Guest speakers from sport social enterprises and the wider social enterprise ecosystem will enhance students' understanding of issues faced in establishing these organisations, with their mentoring aiding the development of students start-up plans.
While students are only required to outline a proposal for a hypothetical sport development charity or business, those who wish to pursue their plans through entrepreneurial means will be encouraged to do so by establishing links with appropriate local stakeholders and the University's Business School and social enterprise award scheme. It should be noted that, if students decide to go down this route, it will have no impact on the assessment of their coursework.
