| Summary | This independent area of study involves the undertaking of a major piece of research in the field of Sport Management. It requires the student to apply the knowledge gained during previous theoretical and practical work in order to answer a specific question or problem. The project is characterised by a high degree of self-directed study, the ability to be critically analytical and demonstrate a deeper grasp of the conceptual issues. The project occupies one third of the Fourth Year programme. |
| Course description |
This core course in the final year of the Sport Management degree sees students develop and carry out a research project supervised by an appropriate member of staff. Students will take responsibility for planning their work, engaging with their supervisor, conducting their research and writing up their dissertation. Learning throughout the degree, including specific research methods courses in year 2 and 3, equip students for this course.
Students will write a non-assessed proposal early in semester 1 and use this as the basis to develop their project through discussions with their supervisor. Students will need to complete an ethics application in semester 1 and follow appropriate procedures throughout the research process.
The research process is supported by a supervisor and by four seminars spread throughout the year that focus upon a specific aspect of the research process.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Undertake research work with a critical and intellectual awareness of the problems associated with research design, including an applied understanding of research ethics
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of the relationships between concepts and research methodology
- Illustrate an exemplar relationship between a particular conceptual theme and the practice of sport management
- Demonstrate the skills of communication and argument when dealing with complies theoretical and practical presentations
- Produce a piece of work which contributes to knowledge in relation to sport management
