| Summary | This course considers the connection between sport and physical activity (PA) in relation to health from a policy and management perspective. The course incorporates policymaking and strategic and operational issues. This includes an examinations of the marketing of PA and sport and its implications when considering the relationship between 'traditional' sport, PA and health. |
| Course description |
This interdisciplinary course will involve the critical application of the fields of marketing, management and policy analysis to sport and physical activity (PA) in the context of public and individual health.
Sport policy has had a recent Policies for sport and health have each reflected an increased focus on PA as a determinant of personal and societal health. Students will develop a critical understanding of the impact that PA and sport has on health, and they will examine the relationship between policymakers and sport & PA providers. This will include an exploration of factors such as socioeconomic landscapes, cultural influences and funding issues.
The content of the course will include exploring the spectrum of physical activities, including sport, examining PA guidelines in relation to specific populations, national and international policy, analysis of public health campaigns and the operationalisation of sport, PA and health-related work.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of key definitions relating to sport and physical activity and apply terminology appropriately
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the value of physical activity within society and policymaking and in relation to the broader sport and health sectors
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of public health campaigns and be able to analyse relevant marketing collateral and public messaging
- Critically review local and global public policy in relation to sport, physical activity and health
- Demonstrate communication skills through written, visual and verbal media, including communication with relevant external stakeholders
