|Summary||Physical activity benefits physical and mental health. It promotes social connectedness, quality of life, and general well-being. However, in 2012 the Lancet declared a global pandemic in terms of a lack of physical activity. This course will introduce and explore the complex relationship between physical activity, sedentary behaviour and health. It will discuss the evolution of current physical activity recommendations, and examine the current evidence base that has informed these and identified physical activity as a key modifiable lifestyle behaviour that contributes to disease and mortality. The course will be taught by research active members of the Physical Activity for Health Research Centre (PARHC, http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/education/rke/centres-groups/pahrc).
Drawing from several disciplines this course will consider topical issues relating to physical activity and health. Specifically, this course will consider contemporary definitions of physical activity and sedentary behaviour and current data regarding population levels. It will explore the fundamental concepts, principles and approaches to the study of physical activity and sedentary behaviour so that we can examine and make sense of the evidence that describes the relationship between these behaviours and health. Drawing from the evidence-base, the course will critically consider the current physical activity and sedentary behaviour recommendations, and examine current policy initiatives, and look at some of the correlates of physical activity, notably the built environment and transport.
Students will be encouraged to actively participate in interactive discussions and learning activities. Students will be set material to watch and read before class, and set tasks to guide their reading and engagement with the material. Assignments will further facilitate consideration of the lecture material and how it relates to additional research papers and application. Students will also have the opportunity to engage with PAHRC-led research activities.

||Task 1 (25%) Oral presentation
Task 2 (75%) Written assignment (3001 words)
All learning outcomes are evidenced across both assessments.
||Students will receive formative feedback on their topic choice, and feedback on their oral presentation which will also provide feedforward for the second assignment. Students are specifically asked to detail their 'Action on Prior Feedback' on the cover sheet of their second assignment. Individual feedback will be given on the written assignment (75% of mark). Previous cohort feedback will be available as feedforward and cohort feedback will also be provided for the current year group.
